DISNEY has recently announced that they will be doing a television series based on the famous movie series, High School Musical.

Disney Channel said that they would be streaming this on their own version of Netflix called Disney+ and it will be aired sometime in late 2019. The production is set to start this February.

The series is reported to only have 10 episodes and themed as a documentary styled series. Moreover, Variety.com said that Tim Federle – writer for the film Ferdinand and other young adult novels – will be the official series writer.

At present, the show is still casting actors for the production.

According to Backstage.com, Disney is still looking for actors to play supporting roles within Utah. In addition, the show will be called High School Musical: The Musical.

According to a press release by Disney, it will contain new songs and some renditions from the original high school musical. Moreover, it will be a new set of freshmen Wildcats who would experience their high school life with the drama and the ups and downs of a theater group.

The series would include a brand-new slate of personalities like Ricky, Nini, Vikram, and others who would experience the Wildcats culture in East High.

The show would also be part of Disney+ new series like a series on Star Wars and a Monsters.Inc animated series. Disney chairman and CEO, Bob Iger, said that Disney+ starting rate would be below Netflix’s subscription fee of $10.99. He stated that it is more about attracting many subscribers as possible in starting out.

For now, the series isn’t confirmed to tie in to the original storyline of High School Musical or that original stars would be returning or make a cameo in this new series. However, Bart Johnson – the actor for Coach Bolton in the original movie series – is game to appear in the new TV series.

He stated on his Instagram account that he is excited to be part of this new team of Wildcats and tagged @disneychannel – the official social media page of Disney – that he is interested in being one of the casts.

Finally, details on what will be happening in High School Musical: the Musical is yet unknown. Fans will just have to wait until production starts. (Von Daniel R. Plasencia, USC Intern)
