School to confer honorary doctorate

HOLY Angel University (HAU) will confer the honorary degree on Doctor of Science (Management) to Washington SyCip, founder of SGV & Co. and co-founder of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).

SyCip, 89, is the second recipient of the HAU honorary doctorate.

HAU President Dr. Arlyn S. Villanueva said the University is honored to welcome Mr. SyCip to its academic community.

“His wise advice is sought even by international organizations and his stature in accounting and consultancy is legendary,” Dr. Villanueva said.

SyCip is the recipient of the 1992 Magsaysay Award for International Understanding.

He holds a Master of Science degree in Commerce from Columbia University in New York, has served as a Member of Board of Overseers of the Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business; Board Member of the Joseph H. Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies at University of Pennsylvania; Member of the International Advisory Board of Council on Foreign Relations; and Member of the International Advisory Board of the Chase Manhattan Bank.

He is also a member of the International Advisory Board of the American International Group, and is the Chairman of the Asia Pacific Advisory Committee of the New York Stock Exchange.

SGV & Co., which SyCip founded in 1946, is the Philippines’ largest professional services firm, providing world-class assurance, tax, transactions advisory and risk services.

The conferment ceremonies will be held during a special academic convocation on March 17, 2010 at the University Theatre.

Last year, PLDT Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan received the degree Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa, for his achievements in telecommunications and social commitment.(Press release)
