Mendoza: Jordan on James’ mind now?

MICHAEL Jordan is not only the greatest of all time, he is also the only NBA player—past or present—to own a team in the NBA (National Basketball Association).

After playing 15 NBA seasons for mostly the Chicago Bulls where he won six crowns (he also played for the Washington Wizards), Jordan, who turns 56 on Sunday (Feb. 17), is currently the principal owner and chairman of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets.

The Wikipedia said Jordan became the controlling owner of the Hornets beginning in 2010.

So enormous are Jordan’s business interests that no NBA player—past or present—could even come close to giving him a decent competition on that aspect.

Recently, LeBron James intimated at imitating Jordan, as in also wanting to own an NBA team someday.

James, the owner of eight straight NBA Finals, has three NBA rings: two with Miami in 2012 and 2013 and one with Cleveland in 2016.

James’ 2016 title was a classic come-from-behind feat. It also rewrote the league’s record books as the Cavs became the first to rally from 1-3 for the winning 4-3 triumph against the Warriors.

With that win, the Cavs also ended a title drought in major sports for Cleveland since 1964—all the more solidifying James’ star status.

But after James and the Cavs lost to the Warriors in the NBA 2018 Finals, James moved this season to Los Angeles, where he is struggling for recognition in the company of untested young players.

With his kid-teammates, James can only do so much: Hand-to-mouth existence. Title-chasing has become but a dream.

Unable to snare Anthony Davis, the Lakers are mired in 10th in the Western Conference, three games behind the eighth-place Clippers.

So don’t blame James if his mind is somewhere else now, as in copying Jordan’s path of owning an NBA team, too, when he retires.

“Ain’t no maybe about it, I’m going to do that shit,” James todld The Athletic about his becoming an NBA team owner soon.

He also said that “I want to be my own boss, like I have been for a long time now.”

At 35, James might be having creaky bones.

LeBron browsing is on.
