WHEN my parents were in Davao a week ago, we were looking for some place to have dinner near the hotel they were staying at.

I remembered seeing this new restaurant near 7/11 along C.M. Recto Ave. Just behind Marco Polo Hotel Davao is this new buffet restaurant called Sobremesa.

The buffet restaurant was fairly full on a Sunday evening with groups of friends and families having their dinner.

The buffet spread that night included fried chicken, beef mechado, pancit guisado, white sauce tuna pasta, and shrimp kare kare. There were also the staples like the soup, rice, and salad bar. The dessert bar included a sweet macaroni salad, coffee jelly, maja blanca, brownie, buko pandan shots, and fruits.

I did not have high expectations for the food here but surprisingly, at P330 per person, the quality of food was quite good.

The beef mechado was really good and the beef was very tender.

The white sauce tuna pasta was also great. I was pleasantly surprised that it was spicy and I loved it.

One funny thing I noticed was there was so much shrimp at the buffet table that time. There was shrimp in the pasta, shrimp in the pancit guisado, and shrimp kare-kare.

The desserts are nothing to rave about but I could say it was okay. I did like their coffee jelly.

My biggest issue was they were quite slow in refilling their dishes. When we came in, the beef mechado and shrimp kare kare are yet to be refilled while the dessert station was about to go empty. Since they just opened in December last year, I will give them a pass for now as they adjust with the crowd coming to the buffet restaurant. I do hope they improve soon.

However, I did appreciate their service. The staff were very accommodating and the owners were also very hands-on. I also appreciate how they approach diners who just came in to inform them that they have refilled the food on the buffet table.

Overall, Sobremesa is a pretty good buffet restaurant. The food they offer are also of better quality than other buffet restaurants that have a similar price.

Sobremesa is located behind Marco Polo Hotel Davao. Turn at the small corner near 7/11 along C.M. Recto Ave. and you will find a new commercial complex where the restaurant is located.
