Namfrel, XU pursue preparation for 2019 polls

A POLL watchdog and Xavier University are relaunching its loose network and non-partisan movement aimed at achieving clean, honest and fair elections in May.

The Lambigit Igsoon para sa Hiniusang Pag-uswag sa Katilingban (Lihuk) movement initiated by Xavier University through the National Citizens Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) bares their series of election-related activities.

Nestor Banuag, Lihuk convenor and local chairperson of Namfrel-Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental chapter, said they are tapping anew their different partners to get their commitment.

"Naa mi sa level karon nga gi-strengthen nato ang movement that's why gibalikan nato atong mga partners like police, the archdiocese ug uban pang partners for renewal of their commitment and to join us again in the continuing involvement to achieve clean, honest and fair elections," Banuag said.

Banuag said one of the activities that they planned to conduct is the "Kwentuhang Bayan," a political education campaign designed to gather the opinion of the vulnerable sectors of the society including the youth, urban poor, women, among others.

He said the output of the "Kwentuhang Bayan" will be integrated to the series of candidates' forum for local candidates to be hosted by the university.

The candidates' fora are set in different schedules on April where congressional, mayoral and vice-mayoral candidates including aspiring city councilors will be given the opportunity to express their views on different issues.

Banuag said there will be a training of trainers next weekend for the said massive campaign which targets around 60 participants.

"We are also exploring to host a senatorial candidates forum kung atong makaya," Banuag said.

Banuag also said Lihuk will also facilitate a candidates briefing together with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) before the campaign period for local candidates starts.

He said during the briefing, candidates will be oriented with their responsibilities and the do's and don’ts during the campaign season.

Banuag also said they will help the poll body monitor the whole electoral process.

"Last namo nga engagement is election monitoring and XU will host the Namfrel local chapter and diri atong command center together with the PPCRV," Banuag said.
