Monitoring board to start Inayawan landfill rehab

THE multi-tripartite monitoring (MTM) board is set to meet next week to start the rehabilitation of the former Inayawan Sanitary Landfill in Cebu City.

Nida Cabrera, chief of the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro), said her personnel have started cleaning the passageway of leachate.

The drainage, she said, was declogged so the leachate can reach the pond.

The City Government set aside P135 million as an initial fund for the landfill's rehabilitation, which was recommended by the Court of Appeals, which granted the Writ of Kalikasan sought by Councilor Joel Garganera.

Cabrera said the rehabilitation will push through despite the legal issue involving the 15-hectare landfill, which is claimed by a private citizen.

The MTM is headed by the Environmental Management Bureau.

A contractor will soon build the fence on the landfill's perimeter as its design recommended by a consultant is almost complete.

Cabrera assured that they have a system that the residents living near the landfill cannot intake methane gas, but she did not elaborate such system. (From PAC of Superbalita Cebu/KAL)
