56 firms, 180 homes pollute Bulacao river

AROUND 56 establishments and more than 100 houses were identified by the city environment office to have contaminated the Bulacao River in Cebu City.

Aside from the houses, Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO) head Nida Cabrera said dressing plants, slaughterhouses and stores found situated near the river may have contributed to its pollution.

The CCENRO said most of the establishments they monitored were dumping their wastewater into the river. One particular establishment allegedly even threw chicken feathers into the river.

She said they already conducted an orientation with the owners and told them to refrain from doing these illegal activities or face sanctions.

“We will issue a cease and desist order. But if they will still not follow, then we will advise the mayor (Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña) for closure,” she said.

Aside from establishments from Barangays Bulacao, Inayawan and Cogon Pardo, the environment office found 180 houses in Barangay Inayawan to have thrown their wastes into the river. This number still does not include the houses within the 11-kilometer stretch of the river which they suspect are also throwing their wastes.

On Saturday, Feb. 23, more than 1,000 people will join a river cleanup starting at the Asian College of Technology (ACT) until the mouth of the river in Barangay Inayawan.

Aside from CCENRO, groups participating in the cleanup drive include the Environmental Management Bureau, Talisay City government, Cebu City’s Department of Public Services, barangay officials and volunteers. (From PAC of SuperBalita Cebu, JKV)
