Council: Create women empowerment program on Girl Child Week

THE 61 barangays in Bacolod City were urged to craft women empowerment programs during the Girl Child Week celebration on March 22 to 28.

The Bacolod City Council approved a resolution encouraging the City Population Office along with the Department of Social Services and Development and the City Health Office to constitute comprehensive orientation program relative to the rights of every girl against teenage pregnancy, human immunodeficiency virus -acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV-Aids), and any unhealthy practices that put every girl in disadvantageous situation.

It is also an effective mitigating measure against population explosion.

The resolution, which was approved during the regular session on Wednesday, February 20, was authored by Councilor Sonya Verdeflor.

Verdeflor said every girl child who is below 18 years of old should be provided with equal opportunities and adequate protection to prepare her for her role in community development.

“There is considerable cause for concern in the increasing number of girls subjected to economic exploitation, prostitution, sexual assault, and abuse, if not given enough and comprehensive orientation,” she added

Verdeflor noted that pursuant to Proclamation No. 759 issued on March 6, 1996, every fourth week of March is declared as the Protection and Gender-Fair Treatment of the Girl Child Week.

Verdeflor disclosed that issues confronting girls like teenage pregnancy and HIV/Aids should be specifically addressed and resolved. (MAP)
