Baguio eyed as honeymoon haven

HONEYMOONERS may soon see more perks in the Summer Capital.

Councilor Leandro Yañgot is pushing for the declaration of the city as “honeymooner’s haven,” in a bid to attract more visitors and boost the local economy.

His proposed measure was approved on first reading during the regular session Monday, February 18.

Yangot said the city is famous not only as a top tourism destination but also as the honeymooner’s haven north of the Philippines.

“This title can be attributed to its natural cool climate where air conditioning is 24 hours a day and the air in the locality is filled with the fresh scent of pine. This is further enhanced by the beautiful hotels and gardens perfect for a dream wedding at reasonable and minimum cost,” Yangot said.

“It is but appropriate and fitting to formally declare Baguio City as Honeymooner’s haven as well as support its establishment as the wedding destination of the North,” he added.

The local law is known as the "Honeymooner’s Ordinance" and will come with a declaration of the city as wedding destination of the north.

Under ordinance, all hotels are urged to prepare a “Honeymooner’s Wedding Package” to those who decide to wed in the City and avail of their hotel facilities and/or services.

Incentives for hotel owners and operators who are supportive of this program shall receive a 10 percent exemption from payment of business taxes of the gross sales/receipts for each honeymoon package hosted.

The Office of the City Treasurer in coordination with the Baguio Tourism Council will be tasked to monitor and formulate the guidelines necessary for the successful implementation of the law when passed.
