Rising track stars

DAVAO City's rising track stars are waiting to be discovered when the first GET Track Invitational kicks off Saturday at the University of Mindanao (UM) track oval in Matina.

Event coordinator Fritz Tan, accompanied by Jinggo Camomot in yesterday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at The Annex of SM City Davao, said Davraa, Batang Pinoy and Palaro runners are no longer eligible to play in the pilot edition of the trackfest.

“We all agreed that this event will give opportunities for those who have not yet experienced running in a world class track,” Tan said, adding that some 320 participants will come from 20 public schools in the event organized by GET Holdings Incorporated and UM.

Entries from Buhangin National High, Cabantian National High, Calinan National High, Crossing Bayabas National High, Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High, Davao City National High, Dona Carmen Denia National High, Pablo Lorenzo National High, Mabini National High, Villa Abrille National High and Cesario National High are seeing action.

Also seing action are runners from Bolton Central Elementary School, Villa Abrille Central Elementary School, Crossing Bayabas Central Elementary School, Imelda Central Elementary School, Maa Central Elementary School, Magallanes Central Elementary School, Quezon Central Elementary School, Teofilo Fernandez Elementary School, Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Central Elementary School and Villafuerte Central Elementary School.

Camomot said they used to organize a basketball tournament for public schools the past three years and it's the first time they are holding the trackfest. Thus, they thank the Philippine Sports Commission, Patafa 11 and Department of Education (Deped) for their support.

“It's high time to develop student athletes na wala pang track program,” Camomot said.
