“Instead of throwing away stuff, I thought we should make use of them especially we all have shoe boxes at home. Make use of them, turn them into an artwork for your own pleasure, turning recycled materials alive again,” Filipino-Chinese architect and artist Bonhui Uy said.

Recycled materials may end up on a processing plant but for Architect Uy, recycled materials are the pieces for his masterpiece. Recycled newspapers, magazines, cardboard, shoeboxes, caps, corks, and sheet-metal, are the main materials he is using in his artworks.

Inspired by the daily objects he sees every day, Uy creates simple but artists representations of animals, cars, planes, and other objects but most of it are inspired by nature.

As an artist, Uy’s hunger for creativity did not stop as a thriving architect and explored a new form of art.

“Ten years since I finished my architectural degree, I felt that I should do something on my own, not just the profession. I need my own space, to create my own stuff. I did it slow, as a leisure not work.

When his architectural work declined, he spent more time in mastering his craft.

A single artwork can take half to a whole day of creation. But the conceptualization part takes more time, Uy said.

But in this way, Uy finds it as an escape away from the daily stress of his work as an Architect.

The renowned architect and artist has already exhibited his artworks in many museums, train stations, and other public and private places but Uy felt glad in his exhibit here at Tan Yan Kee Auditorium, Davao Chong Hua School, Sta. Ana Ave., Davao City with the young ones participating his workshop.

Uy’s masterpiece goes beyond every age bracket as it uplifts our inner childhood just by seeing the recycled masterpieces. We may perceive or define art in a thousand ways but for Architect Uy, All Recyclable Things are Masterpiece.

The exhibit will run until today from 4pm to 9pm and is free admission.
