Mendoza:Take care of that knee, Tony

ONE amazing thing about Tony Aldeguer is, he replies quickly to letters.

I know many people who are so unlike Tony. One of them is Bistek Bautista, the graduating mayor of Quezon City, who has never replied to anyone when called upon to speak on a matter concerning his turf. Not even to the famous Ted Failon.

I wish Bistek could learn a thing or two about ethics from Tony A.

But to press the issue further, aren’t most politicians like that? You only matter to them when they are on the campaign trail. After giving them your vote, you next become history to them.

If only looks could kill?

Ah, never mind. Why stain your soul with nincompoops?

Thus, if everybody is like Tony, this world will be a better place to live in.

Here’s Tony’s reply to my letter to him last week.

“Dear Al,

“It is really nice to hear from you again after such a long time.

“With regard to my fitness regimen, my age-stricken knee no longer allows me to jog, although I do a thrice a week conditioning at the UCMED rehab gym.

“It has been over two years since I retired from boxing—even long before Mark Magsayo opted to leave ALA Promotions. My managerial contract with him at that time already expired and I did not renew my license with GAB as a boxing manager.

“Would you believe that since my retirement I never stepped even once in my own gym? Yes Al—not even just for a minute.

“Honestly speaking, I am not privy on the case of Magsayo—more so now that it is in the hands of the court.

“This, in itself, prevents me from doing anything—not even to ask Michael to accede to your request. I am with you in hoping that this matter could be settled once and for all and I pray it would be soon for the good of all concerned.

“A friend always, Tony.”

Your gesture is worth an Olympic gold.

Your son is also like my son: Power entrusted him is his and his alone. If we are not asked, shut up. Opinions not wanted. That’s why we are buddies.

But, hey, continue working on that knee, please?

Knee is movement and movement is life, remember? Bests.
