JUST a few in local chess circle must have only known him as the nephew of Air Force man and Gingoog City chess stalwart Allan Cantonjos.

But after his big win at the expense of Cagayan de Oro’s top juniors, Jake Riddick Sabordo of Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) has clearly made a name for himself.

In an awesome display of chess skills, Sabordo conquered Palaro veterans Ronald Canino, also from MOGCHS, and Jasaan pride Clyde Harris Saraos en route to ruling the high school division of the 2019 Parents Chess Club Rapid Chess Tournament held, over the weekend, at the Iponan City Mall in Cagayan de Oro.

The little-known Sabordo split the point with fellow MOGCHS player Aquino, the City Mall champion of the first ever Kuya Kap inter-school chessfest some weeks ago, as they end up tied at 5 points each.

Sabordo, however, edged Aquino in the Bucholz tiebreak to bring home the P2,300 top purse plus medal, courtesy of the organizing Parents Chess Club and National Master Roly Tan.

“Sabordo is another revelation from Gingoog City nga na known sa chess through Allan Cantonjos and the late army man Erwin Alerta. Dili basta-basta nga iyang gipeldi silang Canino ug Saraos,” observed jaded pawnpusher Jokorn Maestrado.

“It was a tough junior event and, of course, daghan nakurat nga si Jake Riddick nga underdog ang ni prevail,” added tournament arbiter Jun Cuizon.

Aquino grabbed P1,800 for solo second place, while Canino and Saraos occupied third and fourth, respectively, with identical 4.5 points.

Lady chess warrior Mary Joy Tan of Misamis Oriental defeated former National Shell Active kiddies titlist David Rey Ancheta of Corpus Christi School to lead a big bunch of 4-pointer that includes Klaus Russell Jimenez, Ancheta and Symond Ridge Fernandez.

Completing the top-10 finishers are Ashlanio Pandi and Rhea Jean Canino with 3.5 points apiece and another MOGCHS Cavalier Paul Andrew Romanda who led 5 other 3.5 pointers in the tiebreaker.
