Oscars beauty trends

WE’RE seeing lots of dresses on our social media feeds after the 91st Academy Awards took place earlier this week. As usual, your resident beauty enthusiast is just as, if not more, curious about the hair and makeup as much as the couture. Here’s what I noticed on this year’s red carpet.

Brushed up brows

All manner of brow styles were seen on the red carpet; some, like Emilia Clarke, went quite natural without emphasizing the arches too much, while others like Kacey Musgraves and Lady Gaga went for perfectly shaped brows. I noticed, though, that several went for a more brushed-up look at the front of the brow, instead of taming brow hairs towards the temples as we usually do. Amandla Stenberg (popular for her role as Rue in “The Hunger Games”) and Brie Larson both sported full brows with the front hairs brushed up.

Colorful eyeshadow

Before, there was a lot more attention on eyelashes and eyeliner, while eyeshadow was usually more on texture (shimmery nudes or smokey eyes with a touch of sparkle) rather than color. There were still a lot of winged eyeliner looks, like on Gemma Chan and a Twiggy-esque version on Elsie Fisher. But this year more than previous years, I noticed many of the stars’ makeup artists chose to play with color: deep bronze on Emma Stone, soft apricot-pink almost all the way up to the brows on “Bohemian Rhapsody” star Lucy Boynton, and sky blue to match Laura Harrier’s dress.

Subtle lips

At many red carpet events, lips would be all the focus, with the stars sporting deep burgundy colors or bright pink or red-orange. At these Oscars, only a few like Charlize Theron, Constance Wu and Angela Bassett chose to put on noticeable lip color. Most opted not really for nudes, but subtle hues that put just a touch of color on the lips, like Ashley Graham, Glenn Close and Amy Adams. Jennifer Lopez, of course, sported her signature nude glossy lip.
