Benguet eyes wider expansion of sports incentive

BENGUET lawmakers are set to expand incentives for athletes.

In the Provincial Board Session Tuesday, February 26, amendments to the law giving assistance for delegates participating in the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (Caraa) and Palarong Pambansa sports meet is being pushed.

Committee on Sports and Youth Development of the Benguet provincial board represented by Board Member Nestor Fongwan Jr. said Provincial Ordinance No.17-213 was passed in 2017 providing financial assistance to Benguet athletes participating in athletic meets however, the approved measure “inadvertently did not include their coaches, trainers, chaperons, technical officials, team managers and members of various committee.”

Caraa, the annual sports competition participated by the different provinces in the Cordillera region and sanctioned by the Department of Education (DepEd) while the Palarong Pambansa is an annual multi-sport event organized and governed also by DepEd which comprises of the 18 regions in the Philippines.

An expanded financial assistance is being eyed to guide athletes to reach their full potential and the prosed amendment includes trainers, chaperons, technical officials, team managers and members of various committees from Benguet.

Guidelines to claim the assistance states 30 days prior to the Caraa sports meet, and 45 days prior to the Palarong Pambansa with a certification from the Office of the Provincial Administrator who is tasked to validate and will be subject to recommendation to the Office of the Governor.
