THE Davao City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) has recommended to increase the penalty for illegal parking from P500 to P5,000 to discipline Dabawenyos on proper parking along city streets.

CTTMO head Dionisio Abude said during the I-Speak forum at the City Hall on Thursday, February 28, that they already submitted their request to the City Transport and Traffic Management Board (CTTMB) but there was no reply yet from the latter’s end to amend the penalties imposed for drivers who do not heed to the policy.

Abude, however, revealed that the board agreed to refer their request to the City Legal first to hear their opinion on the proposed amendment. Should there be positive response, a resolution will be made to be submitted to the City Council for its possible approval.

Erring drivers are fined with P500 for illegal parking, obstruction, disregarding traffic sign, no safety helmets, and modification of muffler on motorcycle, and excess passenger, among others.

“Rampant na kaayo ang illegal parking nga makita nato. Dili lang kay sa mga highway kundili sa central business district. Murag ginabalewala lang ang penalty nga P500 sa obstruction ug illegal parking (Illegal parking in the central business district is rampant. Drivers are disregarding the violation because of the P500 penalty),” Abude said.

With this, they are expecting that the higher penalty will deter the drivers to park in areas not designated for parking and that drivers will be disciplined.

Illegal parking is prohibited along national highways like in Maharlika Highway, Davao-Cotabato Road, bypass roads, in Quirino Avenue, Cabaguio, Pichon, among others.

“Akong gi-recommend P5,000, i-maximize gyud nato para naa na jud compliance, dili lang sa establishments nga gina-tolerate sa supplier nila nga diha mu-parking, unya ang kapasidad pod nato sa atong opisina sa CTTMB, is wala mi capacity nga i-tow kanang mga trailer ug dagkong truck (I recommended P5,000 to compel the motorists to comply as well as the establishments who allow their suppliers to park their vehicles, aside from the fact that the CTTMB office does not have enough capacity to tow trailer and huge trucks),” he said, referring to 10-wheeler trucks which are parked at the side of the road. Thus, they are requesting for a towing truck that has a capacity to tow huge vehicles.

“As of now, gina-alarm lang nato na sila, gina-alarm in the sense nga makita nato pagka-kadlawon na naa sila kay ibilin nila ang trailer then ibilin ang prime mover so katong trailer lang ang among maabtan (As of now, we are just alarming them),” he said.
