Grade 6 graduation not canceled: DepEd official

PUBLIC and private elementary schools can still hold graduations for their students, a school official said on Saturday, March 2.

Cebu City School Division Superintendent Bianito Dagatan said nothing had changed except for the terminology.

Based on Department of Education (DepEd) Order 2 series of 2019, students who finish Grade 6 and Grade 10 will have “moving up ceremonies,” while those who finish Grade 12 will have graduation rites.

“As clarified... since the matter is still on discussion by the executive committee of DepEd, we still use the term graduation ceremony for Grade 6,” Dagatan said.

Clarification

Last month, DepEd issued a memorandum that ordered public and private schools to conduct graduation rites only for Grade 12 students.

But following concerns from some parents, Education Secretary Leonor Briones issued another memorandum on March 1, clarifying that Grade 6 students would still have a graduation ceremony.

Dagatan explained that according to the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum, as stated in DepEd Order 2, a student could receive a diploma after finishing kindergarten, elementary, junior high school and senior high school.

“In summary, there is still ceremonies for kindergarten, Grade 6, Grade 10 kinsa makadawat og (who will receive a) certificate samtang (while a) diploma para sa nilampos sa (for those who finish) Grade 12,” Dagatan said.

Moving up ceremonies for Grades 6 and 10 students and graduation rites for Grade 12 students in public schools will be held between April 1 and 5. (from PAC of Super Balita Cebu, JKV)
