Pangan: Days of reckoning

MARCH is traditionally observed as Fire Prevention Month. In its observance, focus is on prevention, if possible that is, of the incidents of fire. A tall order, it is, considering our complacency to follow strict measures to prevent occurrence of fires.

Ironically, more incidents of fire happen, especially in crowded Metro Manila, despite repeated warnings from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). As proven by recent fire incidents, we never learn from previous mistakes.

In Mabalacat City, BFP Office is headed by Fire Chief Inspector Jose Colminero, assisted by Redentor M. Quiambao, Jr., Richard C. Medina, Isagani C. Santos, Joel A. Soriano, Mark Anthony C. Custodio, Gracelli T. Suba, Joey P. Bagtas, John Henry T. Guanlao, Kim M. Atienza, Noemie Joy Basilio; shift A - Daniel B. David and Lee Oliver J. Tompong; shift B - Edison M. Teopaco and Justin Vanne Aguinaldo, Alvin Joseph C. Cruz, Mark Nino I. Villegas, Michael Jefferson Castelo and Argon G. Caras.

It has performed its mandate considerably well. Given adequate equipment and manpower, I believe it can achieve more. The planned building housing, among others, the BFP local office should be erected to boost the morale and working convenience of the fire department officers and personnel.

The Fire Prevention Month should be observed by all concerned; after all, it is their lives and properties that are at stake in the presence of this potential destructive force, fire.

Also expected to spew fire are the candidates for the May 13, elections.

On the national level, the senatorial aspirants of opposing camps have touched base with the electorate in various forms and intensity.

A debate forum is being dangled by the Otso Diretso candidates of the opposition to those of Hugpong ng Pagbabago led by the presidential

daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio.

Whether the debate will push through, courtesy of the Commission on Elections, supposedly the facilitator or moderator, the electorate stands to benefit therefrom in terms of concrete platforms exposed by the candidates.

And what about the independent candidates like Senators Grace Poe and the aged but still wise, sharp and spritely Juan Ponce Enrile? Their take on various issues is worth listening to. Anyway, let us be wise and discreet in our choice of candidates. Remember the quote: “If I commit a grievous mistake I may be a fool; if I commit the same mistake again, I am stupid!”

In Mabalacat City, Mayor Crisostomo C. Garbo is confident of victory in the coming elections. He continues to reach out to voters in barangays through his various health and social programs and it seems the voters appreciate his fine gesture.

Mayor Cris is a hands-on executive and comes to the office regularly and early to dispense with good public service.
