6 alleged 'lone sharks' arrested in Calamba

SIX Chinese nationals were arrested in Laguna on Saturday evening, March 2, over the alleged kidnapping of another Chinese man.

In a report from the Laguna Police Provincial Office, it identified the arrested suspects as Xin Wang, 30; Sun Qing Ji, 26; Hong Zhong Ah,38; Yang Ben, 24; Zhao Da Hai, 40 and Si Cuan, 42.

The police said on February 27, they received a report from a concerned citizen that they heard somebody asking for help in a resort in Barangay Pansol, Calamba City which prompted them to conduct surveillance and validation operation there.

On March 2, at about 11 p.m., policemen trooped the said resort and rescued the victim identified as Edison Yen, 30.

According to the account of the victim, he said he was abducted by the group in Makati City on February 27, Wednesday and held him at the said resort after failing to pay them his debt after playing at a casino.

Police said the arrested suspects are alleged members of a “lone shark” gang in China whose modus was to offer Chinese tourist funds to play at a casino and when they won, the syndicate will get their money while if they loses, they will oblige their victim to pay with interest.

It said that if the victim failed to pay the money, they will be kidnapped and asked for ransom money from their families in China which will be sent through wire transfer for his release.

Police said there were already several incidents as such however, victims sometimes refuse to file charges against the suspect of such kind of incidents as they are “too afraid” that the group will get back to them and their families. (SunStar Philippines)
