AFTER its four-year hiatus, the Miss Teen Philippines, known for having young girls as beauty queens and ambassadresses for education to help the youth, is back.

This year, a total of 15 candidates will vie for the regional finals of the Miss Teen Philippines 2019 which will be held at SM CDO Downtown Premier on Sunday, March 10.

The regional finalists are Kia Cañete and Isobel Ieaño from Misamis Oriental; Charlene Perocho from Misamis Occidental; Francine Gamboa and Monique Gonzales from Bukidnon; Shayne Acobo, AJ Cañete, Shania Capinpuyan, Melody Lusterio, Nikki de Moura, Kamyll Pla, Heidi Sheng, Cez Silapan, Danica Sing, and Nhecolle Vine from Cagayan de Oro City.

"I see when we interviewed the candidates and I'm very, very proud to say that from all the applicants, we've chosen the best. Hopefully from this batch will come another Miss Teen Philippines for 2019," Department of Tourism (DOT)-Northern Mindanao Director Marie Elaine Unchuan said during the presentation of candidates on Sunday, March 3, at the event center of SM City Cagayan de Oro.

Apart from its nature as a beauty pageant, the candidates for Miss Teen Philippines 2019 Northern Mindanao are advocating for education, tourism, reproductive health, women's rights and empowerment, environment and mental health.

And interestingly enough, this pageant, with the candidates aged 14 to 18, does not have a specific height requirement.

"Miss Teen Philippines is not just about beauty. Miss Teen Philippines really is about leadership, is about being an example to everybody. And I hope that since we had a hiatus, now we would like to continue it because as far as we know, we produced very, very good women that we are proud of," Unchuan said.

The first Miss Teen Philippines, which was in 2004, winner came from Northern Mindanao, Stephanie Sol. In 2007, another candidate from the said region won Miss Teen Philippines in the person of Maxine Monasterio.

And this year, the Northern Mindanao is looking forward to produce another winner for the Miss Teen Philippines 2019.
