Fad diets not recommended for weight loss: NNC

CABBAGE-soup diet, low-carb diet, liquid diet, low-fat diet and fasting.

These are some of the fad diet practices deemed risky by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) 7.

The resolution condemning fad diets was approved last Feb. 26 by the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) of the NNC 7, which is under the Department of Health (DOH) 7.

According to RNC resolution 2019-02, the RNC adopted the policies of the NNC.

“Fad diets are not recommended for weight loss as they may pose potential health risks and dangers. Instead, the NNC recommends the adherence to a holistic, sustainable, adequate and nutritionally balanced diet complemented by an active lifestyle and lifelong behavioral modifications,” a portion of the NNC statement read.

The NNC reported that some effects of fad diet practices include stress, body pain and psychological implications.

The health agency further said: “It is also the position of the NNC that individual efforts to address overweight and obesity must be complemented with population-based interventions, particularly on the promotion of healthier food environments and food systems and public awareness through behavior-change communications, to prevent further increase in overweight and obesity prevalence in the country.” (From HBL of SuperBalita Cebu, KAL)
