THE Cebu City Council wants the Office of the Mayor to call the attention of the contractor of the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) project to comply with all the safety measures mandated by law.

In a privilege speech, Councilor Jocelyn Pesquera said safety of the public passing along the CCMC construction site along N. Bacalso Ave. has been compromised because of the blatant disregard of the contractor of the safety guidelines.

“As one of the commuters who frequently pass the said area, I could actually see the wanton disregard of the contractor on the safety measures in ensuring that no untoward incident would happen while construction is ongoing,” she said.

In one of the instances, Pesquera said she happened to pass by the area where a craner was extended beyond the perimeter fence of the ongoing construction.

The slightest malfunction of the equipment, Pesquera said, could have led to an accident.

“Allowing the contractor to continue doing so would compromise or jeopardize the safety of the pedestrians and commuters passing by the said area. Allowing it to continue is definitely a disaster waiting to happen,” she said.

At present, C.E Padilla Construction Inc. is undertaking the P283 million Phase 2 of the CCMC project. They are the same contractor that worked on Phase 1 of the project.

Phase 2 will be focused on all the utilities, which include plumbing, electrical, fire protection, mechanical, communication and the structural finishes.

Once work will be completed, the City plans to start using the first three floors of the building.

They will be used for the emergency room and out-patient department, among others.
