Carvajal: Recognizing change

FEUDAL lords do not want change that threatens the absolute control they have over their serfdoms. Unmistakable signs they now feel under siege behind thick-walled castles are their refusal to recognize some fairly obvious positive changes in our society and their partisan, non-constructive criticism of just about everything the also-feudal lord in Malacañang is doing.

Take the Magnificent 7 and the Yellows. The former criticize the drug war from feigned conscience and principles while the latter cry foul at the (extrajudicial?) way it is done, conveniently glossing over the fact that in their time they hardly lifted a finger against drugs and allowed narco-politics easy entry.

Critics blame the Executive Department for everything that is wrong in this country when on closer look, of the three branches of government the executive is the best performing. It probably could perform better if it were not for a “pork-barelling” pro-no-term-limit Congress and a vastly unreformed and inadequate judiciary.

We do have to cringe and disapprove of the President’s cussing, blaspheming, gender-insensitivity and softness to the corrupt Marcos family. But we must also recognize the reality of his accomplishments. How does it go now, better p----g ina than teka teka?

The reader can do his own research as I only have space for a significant few:

-- AmbisyonNatin2040 is this country’s first-ever long-term development plan. Instead of fighting over what divides us, we now have something with the potential of uniting us.

-- More than strictly implement the Agrarian Reform Law, the Duterte government is subjecting idle government-owned lands to agrarian reform.

– The newly set up Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is a big step forward for peace in Mindanao. So was the defeat by government forces of Muslim terrorists in Marawi.

– The Reproductive Health Law is now being fully implemented while the National Health Insurance Program guarantees medical services to every citizen. Both are pro-poor legislations.

– Big business lords have been made to settle the huge tax delinquencies they were able to get away with in previous administrations.

– The anti-corruption drive has its problems but it is so far the hardest hitting drive of any administration. Thus, our unwieldy bureaucracy is markedly faster and less corrupt.

-- A federal government is being proposed that rival feudal lords oppose for its feudalism eroding power.

A lot more still needs to be done like reforming the judiciary and making our democracy proportionately representative. Until then, we just have to move forward by recognizing the change in front of us and improving on it with non-partisan constructive criticism.
