IT’S all systems go for the province-wide Governor’s Cup 2019 Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament, set to open on Saturday, March 9, in a simultaneous opening program at eight different venues.

Forty-one teams will compete for the coveted crown in the third edition of the 21-Under basketball tournament organized by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) led by executive director and lawyer Ramil Abing.

“Everything is set and we’re hoping for the success of the event just like our first two editions,” Abing said in the press conference and final coordination meeting at the Golden Peak Hotel on Tuesday, March 5.

One of the changes this year is the team’s bracketing for the elimination round. Unlike in the first two years, the teams are now bracketed based on their congressional district.

Every district will have its separate opening program.

“It turns out that the teams like the idea of simultaneous opening since they have a scheduled game right away and they don’t need to travel far for the opening ceremony,” added Abing.

The tournament has an early opening this year to avoid conflict of schedules for the local government units when the official campaign period starts. The event is set to end before the May elections.

All eyes will be on defending champions Talisay City Aquastars after they swept all their games last year en route to winning the title in a dominant fashion. Talisay City will get its first test this season against Sibonga in the opening day at the Talisay City Sports Complex.

With the bracketing change, the Top 2 in every district will advance to the second round and will win a P100,000 cash prize for bracket champion and P50,000 for bracket runner-up.

The teams in the second round will play a single-round robin with the Top 2 in each bracket advancing to the crossover semifinals.

The prize is P500,000 for the champion, P300,000 for the second placer, P200,000 for the third placer and P100,000 for the fourth placer.

Cash prizes will also be given to individual players. The season MVP will win P10,000 while the members of the Mythical 5 will each get P5,000, respectively.

The opening ceremony for the 1st District will be at the Talisay City Sports Complex, 2nd District at Oslob Municipal Gym, 3rd District at Tuburan Municipal Gym, 4th District at Bogo City Coliseum, 5th District (Bracket A) at Catmon Municipal Gym, 5th District (Bracket B) at Danao City Civic Center, 6th District at Consolacion National High School Gym and 7th District at Dumanjug Municipal Gym.

The teams that will represent the northern side of Cebu are Carmen, Consolacion, Cordova, Danao City, Mandaue City, Catmon, Poro, San Francisco, Sogod, Tudela, Balamban, Bogo City, Tabogon, Tabuelan, Tuburan, Madriejos, Medellin, Sta. Fe, San Remigio and Barili.

Talisay City leads the southern side teams with Carcar City, City of Naga, Minglanilla, San Fernando, Talisay City, Alcoy, Argao, Sibonga, Alegria, Badian, Oslob, Samboan, Santander, Alcantara, Dumanjug, Moalboal, Malabuyoc, Ginatilan, Ronda and Boljoon.

Meanwhile, the CPSC has come up with a sidelight contest this year for media practitioners—the Media Photo Contest and Media Sportswriting Contest. The prizee is P15,000 for the champion, P10,000 for second placer and P5,000 for the third placer. (RSC)
