MALACAÑANG on Wednesday, March 6, was saddened by the passing of Annie Brazil, dubbed as the Philippine Queen of Jazz.

Brazil, who had been confined since last week at St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City due to pneumonia, passed away on Tuesday, March 5. She was 85.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the Palace expressed heartfelt condolences to Brazil's friends and family, including her children, Richard Merk and Rachel Anne Wolfe.

"It is final curtain call for Justiniana Bulawin, or Annie Brazil to Filipinos," Panelo said in a statement.

"We are saddened by the demise of Ms. Brazil known as the Grand Lady of Jazz and the Philippine Queen of Jazz," he added.

Panelo recalled that in 2003, the Filipino-American Jazz Society honored Brazil, as well as her talent and craft, by including her in its roster of Lifetime Achievement Awardees.

Also in 2003, Panelo noted that Brazil received an award from the Asian American Jazz Festival in New York.

"For the woman who has lived a life full of music, rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon her as we pray for the repose of her soul," the Palace official said. (Ruth Abbey Gita/SunStar Philippines)
