Abra out as area of concern?

EVEN with the long history of political-related violence in Abra, the Police Regional Office–Cordillera (PRO-Cor) is considering the removal of the province from the list of areas of concern for the upcoming 2019 midterm elections.

Police Brigadier General Rolando Nana, PRO-Cor regional director, assured that the province remains peaceful despite the tension between two supporters of a political clan in Lagayan town in January this year.

During the inauguration of a new Municipal Police Station in the town of Langiden, Nana said PRO–Cor continues to monitor the political situation in Abra.

“So far here in Abra, we have not monitored any threats and (the province) remains to be peaceful since the start of the campaign (period) for the national position last February 13 and no election-related incidents have been recorded in the province. The Abra Provincial Police Office, however, was able to arrest violators of the Comelec gun ban aside from others who have asked the assistance of the police to subject their firearms for safe keeping specially those who have expired licenses and those surrendering loose firearms,” Nana said.

Nana added that although the province is considered an area of concern, only some municipalities have recorded political violence.

“There are categories which the PNP (Philippine National Police) follows in identifying an area of concern like the municipality of Langiden which has no record of politically related violence,” Nana said.

Nana added that aside from monitoring areas of concern, PRO-Cor continues to look at areas in the region affected by insurgents.

“We have discussed with our counterpart from the Armed Forces of the Philippines particularly with the army units on the deployment of composite teams of the PNP and AFP in such areas if the need arises and to date, we are ready for any eventualities,” the police general said.

Nana assured that members of the PNP will remain neutral.

“The Philippine National Police have issued strict orders for us to remain neutral or apolitical and instead apply and implement existing laws for those who violate the laws,” Nana added.
