MINES and Geosciences Bureau Davao (MGB 11) Regional Director Jasper Alberto Lascano said they are intensifying their information, education and communication campaign (IEC) on the benefits of responsible mining in the region.

During the 6th National Mining, Geology, and Metallurgy workshop-conference Thursday, March 7, 2019, the National Mining, Geology, and Metallurgy Students Organization partnered with MGB 11 and other large-scale mining companies in Davao region to further involve the youth on talks about responsible mining and the status of the mineral industry in the country.

“It is very important that we understand and we give them all the proper scientific and factual information so that they can decide for themselves kung ano ang mga benepisyo ng responsible mining,” Lascana told reporters, adding that the event was an opportunity for the youth to know more about the industry.

“It is a chance for them to know the laws and regulations of proper mining. Inaayawan ng tao ang destruction, but knowing these efforts, knowing the frameworks that we have, makikita nila na meron pala talagang sinusunod na guidelines and strict rules when it comes to mining,” he added.

Lascana said MGB 11 has been keen on monitoring small and large-scale mining companies to ensure sustainable mining operations.

The event was participated by high school and college students from different schools in the city.

Lascana said that in order to address the negative perception of mining operations in the country, the IEC campaign of the MGB 11 has been intensified together with the local government units, local civic groups, government and non-government organizations and media outlets, among others.

"We are very happy to be participating in this campaign because whatever it is the MGB is doing together with the DENR, our efforts cannot come into full permission without the support of all stakeholders most especially the youth," Lascana said.
