Mendoza: Make Mayule your poster gal in a while or so

SOME listen to their hearts, others their minds.

But to Mayule Mislang Tomimbang, doing both would be nicer than nice.

To Mayule, it was just a matter of prioritizing things.

But to the mostly young and restless, though, love (heart) would be first.

Isn’t love often labeled as blind that lovers cannot see, the Waterloo of the “rebels without a cause?”

Make Mayule the exception.

As a kid growing up in Florida, Mayule already showed signs of acting, making decisions, beyond her age.

At the Gateway High School in Kissimmee, Fla., she was golf’s MVP and Player of the Year four straight years in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. She swept all high school golf titles: district, regional and state championships.

She was third in the tough Florida State Women’s Golf Championship in 2007.

As a 14-year-old, she fired an eagle-spiked 8-under-par 63 that became the lowest final-round score in the 2003 championships.

She knew from the start she could hit it big in golf.

But Mayule—like Tiger, maybe?—bided her time.

She went to college, finishing her BS in Engineering Technology degree with flying honors at the University of Central Florida on May 17, 2009.

Her diploma now tucked neatly under her belt (she is also a taekwon-do first dan black belter), Mayule turned pro right after graduation

She qualified in the Futures Tour with an impressive 24th-place finish among 287 starters on rounds of 74-75-77-68-72=366 (+6).

After a two-month break from the Tour, Mayule, emerging from deep meditation (she does yoga), said: “I have the potential to be a marketable commodity not just on the Futures Tour but the LPGA as well. After one season as a pro, I realized I wanted to be a contender, if not the best.”

Watch out for this compatriot of ours, a looker of a daughter of Wendell and Rosalinda (Mislang) of Mangatarem, Pangasinan.

Listen to her: “Coming from a family of engineers, I intend to make my golf game an engineering project.”

For Mayule, the whole world is there for the taking.

After all, Mayule just turned 22 on Valentine’s Day.

Bests, Mayule!
