4 'car thieves' killed in Muntinlupa shootout

PERSONNEL of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) killed on Friday dawn, March 8, four suspected car thieves in an operation in Muntinlupa City.

Philippine National Police (PNP)-HPG Director Roberto Fajardo said his men were conducting anti-carnapping and anti-criminality operation around 5:25 a.m. along Daang Reyna, Southville 3, Poblacion, Muntinlupa when they spotted a Hyundai Accent that was earlier reported stolen.

He said when operatives tried to flag down the vehicle, the driver refused to pull over and instead, its passengers fired on the policemen, resulting in a chase and a gun battle.

Three men died on the spot, while the other one died in the hospital.

The identity of the suspected car thieves is still unknown but Fajardo said one of their victims positively identified them as the group who tried to stole his van along Bayani Road in Taguig City on Thursday evening, March 7.

According to the victim, the suspects failed to stole his van due to a roving police patrol, although they got hold of his keys.

Recovered from the suspects were assorted identification cards apparently issued by the PNP and Philippine Army, license cards with different names but same photos, police uniforms and several firearms such as shotgun, caliber .45 pistol and caliber .38 revolver.

A sachet of suspected illegal drugs was also found in the pocket of the suspect who died in the hospital.

Fajardo said the vehicle used by the suspects during the shootout was stolen on October 8, 2017 in Pandacan, Manila.

The temporary license plate attached to the vehicle was assigned to a Hyundai Eon, based on the records of the Land Transportation Office. (SunStar Philippines)
