Oro’s Yap impressive in winning GBO crown

JOURNEYMAN Marjohn Yap of Cagayan de Oro hopes to corner bigger fights in the future after capturing the vacant Asia-Pacific featherweight belt in last weekend’s maiden promotion by the Global Boxing Organization (GBO) here at Limketkai Mall’s rotunda.

“Basta naay chance I’m more than willing to grab any boxing opportunity that comes my way. Mas disiplinado ug determinado ko karon. Pero una sa tanan, happy kaayo ko nga nagmadaugon dire sa atong siyudad,” said the Oro native Yap after stopping Sultan Kudarat bet Ulyssis Lagos in the seventh round of their GBO championship bout on Sunday.

A product of the Batang Pinoy Games in the company of the more illustrious Milan Melindo, Yap completely dominated Lagos sending him reeling most of the times with a barrage of telling punches.

Lagos tried to counter but was badly hurt in the seventh round and Yap easily claimed the victory before the wild-cheering hometown fans.

“This is just the start of our boxing collaboration here in Cagayan de Oro. The GBO outfit is doing well in the US with my son Cacoi handling its affair. We’re looking to more fruitful boxing promotions in the country the soonest possible,” said Rey Rodis, a former boxing promoter in Cagayan de Oro who’s now based in the US. (LLS)
