DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Friday, March 8, hit back at those who reacted negatively to her statement that every politician is a liar.
In an interview with reporters at the sidelines of the Conferment of Datu Bago Awardees 2019 Friday at Arcadia Event Center, Duterte-Carpio said the Philippine Constitution does not prohibit liars from running for a government post.
"Nowhere in our Constitution does it require that a person to run for senator needs to be honest. There is a reason nganong dili na siya ginabutang dinha (why its's not included there) because everyone lies. That is the truth," the lady mayor said.
She even dared other senatoriables who refused to be labeled as liars to show it in the way they campaign this season.
"So kung mag-deny man ang other senatorial candidates about their lying, it shows in the way that they campaign because they gave out inaccurate statements, untruthful reports, and that's lying, that's dishonesty," she said.
Duterte-Carpio blurted out the "Everybody lies" statement when opposition senatorial candidates accused pro-administration bets of telling lies. This, after the mayor defended Ilocos Norte Governor and senatorial candidate Imee Marcos who claimed to have graduated from Princeton University and the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law.
Both educational institutions denied the claim of the Marcos eldest daughter.
The feisty mayor added that if lying would be used as basis for disqualifaction then there would be no politician who can run for government post.
"Kung kana lang ang atong basehan (If that would be the sole basis), then they should all be disqualified," she said.
