Senators on sugar liberalization: Not on our watch

SENATORS Juan Miguel Zubiri and JV Ejercito assured on Friday, March 8 that the proposed liberalization of sugar industry won't pass in the Senate.

Zubiri pointed out that the proposed sugar liberalization needs congressional approval.

“For as long as we are in the Senate, we assure the Negrenses and the 28 provinces that are producing sugar that we will not act on it,” Zubiri said.

Zubiri joined the senatorial bets who are supportive of the sugar industry in their grand campaign rally at the Victorias City Coliseum on Friday.

Zubiri also assured that they will kill any move to amend the regulation authority of the Sugar Regulatory Administration that may also lead toward sugar liberalization.

“Everything is on hold with sugar liberalization,” Zubiri said.

Ejercito, for his part, also assured that he will make sure that the farmers’ welfare will be protected.

“We need to revitalize the sugar industry,” he added.

Senatorial aspirant and Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos, for her part, said that the government should focus on the traders who are taking advantage of current situation and causing the prices of sugar to surge. (TDE)
