Lumps and Bruises

TEN warriors from the Guanzon Stable get another chance to be recognized and rated in the Boxing Blow by Blow at the Casino Filipino Hotel on Sunday, February 21 at 1 p.m. at Goldenfields Commercial Complex.

Arthur “El Matador” Villanueva carries with him nine victories, including five knockouts with no defeat as he takes on Butuans’ Daryll Amuncio in 10 rounds of the 115 pound-match in the main event.

Another undefeated, Junjun “D’ Tiger” Sabillo (10-0-0-4KOs) faces Roel Honor of Agusan del Sur in the 105-pound category and tries to extend his clean record.

The undercard matches include the sons of Reverend Henry Guanzon. Janjan “D’ Hitman” Guanzon battles Jun Morano Surigao City in a six-round fight in the 122 pound class.

His brother Rayray “D’ Striker” Guanzon aims to improve his record (four wins with two KOs) against Roel Baquiano of Butuan City.

In the 135 pounds division, Kevin “D’ Great” dela Cruz eyes a win over Bohol slugger Arnel Tagansa while Royroy “D’ Hammer” Sumugat meets Richard Bitos of Butuan in the 118 pounds.

Preliminary bouts include Jerry Nardo against Rolly Llino in 122 pounds; Ryan Sermona versus Jomar Labiogo in 130 pounds and Mike Espanosa opposite Ruben Magno.

At P50 for the upper box and P150 at ringside, you can witness honest-to-goodness brawl as these are hungry boxers trying to make names for themselves.

No question about their rawness; these are young men with nothing to lose but their pride. And you bet, when they fall, they will rise again.

They have nowhere to go. The lumps and the bruises, both physical and mental, will propel them to aim high. This is a sport where most of the participants come from the have-nots.

Their capital is their blood, sweat and tears. Their equipment are borrowed gloves, shoes and shorts -- in the beginning. They don't have caddies, irons and squeaking golf shoes.

Bowlers, billiard kings, chess wizards, glamorous basketball players -- these are the more popular choices. These are the athletes who attract women like bees and money come easy -- if they get lucky.

Boxers? These are the favorites of the "kristos" and the "kapitalistas" after their favorite "sabong". So you see now?

That's why Blow by Blow is at the Casino. It is where the action is.

See you.
