RAISE your hand if you still look forward to family dinners despite having had a taste of swanky restaurants and exotic dishes? After all, there’s nothing quite as comforting and warm as home and home-cooked meals, notwithstanding the attempts of many establishments to replicate both. But even homes get dolled up too when you’re expecting guests or celebrating special occasions, ones on which mom’s fine china would make a rare appearance.

Stepping into Azia Suites and Residences evokes that kind of feeling. Tucked on a quiet street between Gorordo and Mango Avenues, it has a soft vibe and a casual collection of crafty trinkets.

Charming and calming yet far from boring, the hotel has a way of making you feel like an important guest in your own home.

In a conscious effort to elevate its dining experience to suit the ever evolving Cebuano palate, Azia Suites and Residences recently revamped the menu of Cafe Lazat, its hidden gem. A 25-seater cafe on the second floor, the place offers an array of dishes that draw influences from your favorite Filipino fare—like grandma used to make—and transport you to the streets and villages of Southeast Asia.

Helmed by Chef Dennis Uy of Meximama fame, Cafe Lazat’s kitchen whips up inventive yet familiar food in generous portions at minimal costs.

To start, try the Ensalada Filipina, a plateful of greens tossed with candied cashews, mangoes and duck egg in a dressing that hints of spicy bagoong, or the Seafood Dinuldog made grittier with corn and topped with crispy ikan bilis (dried anchovies).

The choices for the mains can be overwhelming as you would want to order everything. There’s the lechon kawali with the cafe’s own sukang pinakurat; the Nasi Goreng, its take on the Balinese fried rice with fried chicken, egg, kerupuk (fried crackers) and pickled vegetables; pad Thai, stir-fried rice noodles with chicken and prawns in a sauce that’s a flavorful mix of tamarind juice and palm sugar; and the pocherong Bisaya, simmered beef shank with bamboo shoots, sweet corn and local vegetables. And that’s just to name a few.

For dessert, the halo-halo turon is beyond belief. Imagine your typical turon stuffed with halo-halo ingredients like ube and langka, coated in extra thick latik and served with good ol’ vanilla ice cream. Yes, it is sinfully rich and yes, you will finish it in one sitting.

The next time you have a hankering for something new and downright delicious, swing by Cafe Lazat at Azia Suites and Residences, Rahmann Extension, Cebu City.
