MCIAA in need of contractors to work on Bantayan airport

THE Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) is looking for contractors to undertake three projects worth P30 million to improve the airport in Bantayan Island.

Aside from improving the airport’s terminal and completing its runway, the airport also needs to be fenced for safety and security, said MCIAA General Manager Steve Dicdican.

“We’ve been conducting bidding on these projects. Unfortunately, there are no takers maybe because the price is not enticing,” he said.

He said the law allows them to enter into a negotiated contract with any contractor that will accept the projects.

Dicdican said the memorandum of agreement between the MCIAA and the Provincial Government indicates that the Authority owns the airport in Bantayan Island.

However, the MCIAA cannot develop a secondary or community airport without the assistance and support of the concerned local government unit (LGU). “They (LGUs) know the market better.

It will be a loss at the start of operation and we have to subsidize until it (Bantayan airport) can support itself,” Dicdican said.

Dicdican believes improving the airport, which is located in the municipality of Sta.

Fe, will attract more tourists and investors to Bantayan. (EOB)
