DAVAO City Councilor Rene Elias Lopez said the approval of applications for the reclassification of some areas to commercial zones and high-density residential zones indicate economic progress in the city.

During the city council session on Tuesday, March 12, the legislators approved the applications of Gaisano Capital Group of Companies and developer Communities Davao, Inc. for the reclassification of their properties.

The Gaisano Capital Group sought the reclassification of 4,648 square meters of land from medium-density residential zone to major commercial zone in line with plans to expand commercial operations in the city.

Communities Davao, meanwhile, sought the reclassification of its property from medium density residential zone to high density residential zone in Buhangin District.

As defined, commercial zones are land used for commercial activities. High-density residential zones have densities greater than one dwelling unit per acre, including both existing and planned development and their associated infrastructure, such as roads, utilities, and water and sewer service.

“It will generate more progress, economic activities and that is one of the pursuits of the government right now. But at the same time, we should be mindful of environment concerns and that is embodied in our comprehensive land use programs," Lopez said.

“It is always a balance between growth, economic prosperity, development plus the ecological balance between our environment, welfare and health. If you observed, ang thinking ng council is more on the progressive side, economic prosperity because of that very important observation, marami, and nare-reclassify," he added.
