WITH the announced acquisition by the New City Commercial Corporation (NCCC) of the Victoria Plaza Mall, some Dabawenyos took to social media to express hope that the name of the first-ever mall complex in Davao City be retained.

NCCC will formally take over ownership of Victoria Plaza on March 27, 2019.

During the signing ceremony Tuesday, March 12, in Manila, NCCC President Sharlene Faye A. Lim said it is a privilege on their part to develop the property which is a part of the city’s culture.

"We will strive to preserve this history while rewriting it to respond to the future,” Sharlene said.

For her part, NCCC Chairperson Helen A. Lim dubbed the acquisition as "historic and strategic" for NCCC.

"As a local, we are very confident in the city’s participation in our country’s growing economy," she said.

Some netizens reminisced about their unforgettable memories of the mall while some commented that the name should not be changed despite the change in ownership.

“Okay lang nga napalit sa NCCC ang Victoria basta dli lang ilisan og name kay nakatatak na na sa huna huna sa mga tao ang pangalan [kay] Victoria Plaza Mall (It is okay that it was acquired by NCCC as long as they will not change the name. The name Victoria Plaza Mall is already embedded in the minds of the people),” commented a certain Xennuj Seidaba Jrainatibol on SunStar Davao's Facebook post on the acquisition.

“NCCC, unta ipadayon ang name sa Victoria Plaza, kahit butangan lng ninyo nccc sa ubos sa name [sic] (NCCC, I hope you just continue to use the name Victoria Plaza even if you put the NCCC below it),” another netizen, Judy Abarca, commented.

Jenny Labustro II also suggested that the name should be retained since it is unique to the city.

NCCC Mall Davao public relations manager Thea Padua said in a Facebook interview with SunStar Davao that there are no details yet on whether they will change the name or not.

She said the company will soon disclose details of the development plans for the mall.

Netizens also discussed the Victoria Plaza design.

While some lauded how the old establishment has remained standing after several decades, some said they want it renovated to give way to a more modern and advanced design for safety purposes.

Meanwhile, Davao City Vice Mayor Bernard Al-ag said in a separate message that it is good that local companies continue to be aggressive in expanding businesses in the city.

“I am glad that I am excited about this new development,” he said.

Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. president Arturo M. Milan said the acquisition indicates how robust the Davao economy is today.

"It also speaks well of the confidence of the local business community in the future of Davao City," he said.
