Commuters to begin enjoying BRT in 2022

THE Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is expected to be up and running by the middle of 2022, project manager Nigel Paul Villarete said.

Some aspects of the project would be operational by then but the BRT routes would be completed before 2024.

Villarete also said there is progress in preparations for the P16-billion project funded by the World Bank.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has appointed technical support consultants and provided for their needs, including an office at the Cebu Business Park (CBP).

There were changes made in the detailed engineering design as consultants, Villarete said, included the Cebu IT Park in the route.

The bus taking the route labeled as Package A would start from the South Road Properties. It would traverse N. Bacalso Ave., Osmeña Blvd. and Escario St. until it reaches CBP and the Cebu IT Park.

Villarate said the study to make Escario a six-lane street is underway and will be completed in three months.

After the DOTr completes the studies and other requirements, Villarete said the next step will be the public bidding. He expected these to be completed in six to eight months, but he hoped the process would be over in four.

Villarete said he expects three biddings for Packages A, B and C of the BRT system, which will start in Barangay Bulacao in the south and end in Talamban in the north.

When Package A is completed, passengers going to Talamban will transfer to another bus in IT Park while the bus stations and BRT lanes are still under construction.

If the plan will be followed, the BRT routes will be completed before 2024, he said. (From PAC of SuperBalita Cebu, KAL)
