Pangan: Water shortage warnings

THIS early, there are warnings from the concerned authorities that we might have acute water shortage should we not take heed of warnings to address the situation promptly and adequately.

Aside from rice, our staple crop, water comes as one of our top priorities, hence, the urgency to come up with stringent measures to preserve it, otherwise, we will have dire consequences.

In Metro Manila, especially, a densely populated area, the possibility of a water shortage will be most felt by its residents, abetted by the coming of the weather phenomenon, the El Nino, which brings drought in many places and lack of rain through these places.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services, or Pagasa, has confirmed that this year may be the warmest year on record due to the El Niño, coupled by global warming.

It is so much better to be forewarned, as they say, than be caught unprepared and sorry.

Maynilad and Manila Water, the firms committed to supply potable water to Metro Manila residents, source their supply from Angat-Ipo-La Mesa dams but their reservoirs register critical levels and if no rain would be forthcoming, a grave problem arises.

Water conservation is foremost in our priority list, so we better come up with various means to conserve this precious commodity.

At the Angeles City Water District, GM Rey Liwanag intimated that his firm has upgraded the pump stations and drilling equipment to assure consistent and ample supply of water to its concessionaires.

As far as ACWD is concerned, he says that there is no immediate threat of water shortage but still he insists that the consumers should find ways to conserve water especially those businesses using water as their main tool such as the car wash firms and those with swimming pools and golf courses.
