THE Department of Agriculture (DA) 7 has not received any request for assistance from farmers in the region despite the dry spell brought about by the El Niño phenomenon.
Lawyer Salvador Diputado, DA 7 director, said the quick response teams (QRTs) that he activated gathered reports from provincial and municipal agriculture offices.
They found out that not a single farmer has sought assistance.
On Thursday morning, March 14, Diputado visited several farms in Bohol and saw that rice farmers were not affected by the intense heat.
He said farmers often harvest rice in March and they do not need water for their farms.
Diputado also said Bohol and Negros Oriental are the only rice-producing provinces in Central Visayas.
The QRTs of the DA 7 coordinated with agriculture offices to monitor the effects of the El Niño or warmer surface waters, in their areas.
The weather bureau said the country would experience a dry spell in the first three months of 2019. (From HBL of SuperBalita Cebu, KAL)
