Cebu batters eye Little League spot

CEBU’S young baseball players are focused on their preparation for the upcoming Little League Philippines Series Visayas Elimination set on April 7 to 15 in Dumaguete City.

Cebu’s batters, who carry the name NorthCebu, are keeping their eyes on the prize when they face their counterparts in the Visayas for the right to earn one of the three tickets to the National Finals in Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

NorthCebu will field players in the three divisions—the Minor division for eight to 10 years old players, Major division for the 10 to 12 years old and the Seniors division for the 15 to 16 years old.

NorthCebu baseball coach Mark Arsenio Davidson told SunStar Cebu on Friday, March 15 the practice for the players is continuous since most of them are going to represent Region 7 in the Palarong Pambansa on April 27 to May 4 in Davao City.

Cebu Province won both the elementary and secondary baseball events of the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet in Dumaguete City last February, giving them the ticket to Palarong Pambansa.

“The players are on top condition because most of them will play in the Palarong Pambansa. The training is continuous,” said Davidson, who added that they want to duplicate last year’s achievement in the Visayas Leg, where they won gold medals in the minor and major divisions.

As posted on the event’s page, the confirmed teams for the Visayas Leg are Anilao, Bayawan City, Dumaguete City, Iloilo Province, Iloilo City, Negros Occidental and City of Naga.

Davidson earlier said that the Philippine Series helps the development of young batters as they get exposure when they are as young as eight years old.

The team will be going to the Philippine Series with a high morale after winning back-to-back gold medals for Cebu Province in the Batang Pinoy Visayas Qualifying in Iloilo City two weeks ago.

“We are very thankful for the support from the LGU, parents and teachers for our team,” he said.. (RSC)
