Brent celebrates 110th anniversary

IN COMMEMORATION of its 110th year of foundation, the Brent International School Baguio (BISB) community came together as one family to honor its founder Bishop Charles Henry Brent.

The celebration started March 9 with flag honors ceremony, a Cordillera dance, and a speeches from Brent headmaster Dick Robbins, Activities director Gladys Kong, and Steve Plagens.

An International Food Festival followed by the Brent Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) held at its field showcasing a food from different parts of the world: Asia-Pacific, Western, East Asian, and Filipino food and desserts.

Opening acts featured performances by students who provided a stage for serenading and creativity: from original compositions, piano and recorder ensemble to acoustic renditions.

A variety show with the themed, “Brent @ 110, Active and Strong” followed performances from different sectors of the community: students, parents, staff, and teachers.

The evening was capped with a community Cordillera dance and a fireworks display--- a mark of the Brent family tradition of community spirit and thanksgiving.

Founded in 1909 Brent School was primarily established to provide the educational needs of the families of American missionaries and military personnel in the country and in Baguio and its environs where there was a small foreign community of mining prospectors.

In 1925, a girl’s boarding home was added and Brent School then became the first coeducational day and boarding school in East Asia.

The overall directors and coordinators were Ben Josephson, school principal; Carlos Rivera, PTA president, Julie Sibucao and Dr. Geverlyn Sacley of the Brent Music Department.
