M. BUTTERFLY, the multi-acclaimed play of David Henry Hwang, is staging in Cebu City the last leg of its National Tour in the Philippines.
It has four performances left -- two matinees and two gala shows, on Saturday and Sunday, March 16 to 17, at Centerstage of SM Seaside Cebu. It opened last March 14, Thursday.
Tickets are priced at P1,065; P1,330; P1,600; 1,865; and P2,130. The price is worth it; Cebuanos may never catch M. Butterfly performing in their city again.
The play has nudity and minors might need parental guidance to watch it.
M. Butterfly tells the disastrous love story between French diplomat Rene Gallimard and Chinese opera actor Song Liling. Despite the long years they have together, Gallimard, a married man, was unaware that Song Liling was a man and a spy.
Tony and Grammy award winning producer Jhett Tolentino and FrontRow Entertainment have taken on an ambitious endeavor of bringing the multi- acclaimed play to key cities outside Manila "to carry on their mission and advocacy in the performing arts and to further enhance audience development throughout" the country.
M.Butterfly had its Philippine premiere in 1990 under Dulaang UP, with an 18-year-old RS Francisco playing the role of Song Liling to the hilt. RS is reprising his role in M. Butterfly National Tour 2019, this time with more nuance and elan than he had in 1990.
The play, staged in Broadway, West End and many other theaters around the world, won the 1988 Tony, Drama Desk, John Gassner, and Outer Critics Circle Award. It also was a finalist for the 1989 Pulitzer Prize.
It has been recognized in the 2018 Aliw Awards as the Best Play.
Tickets can be purchased at SM Tickets online and at the ticket booths of any SM mall. (MPS)
