De Leon: Social media: What you see is what you’ve searched for

ARE you sick and tired of people populating your news feed with stuff that has something to do with the current “political cancer and religious mayhem?” Oh, we’re all on the same page then.

The good news is seeking positivity and kind-hearted content on social media is very easy.

But so is finding negativity and hate.

I firmly believe that we always find what we’re looking for. So many people talk about how the internet is tearing the society down or that there’s so much hate on each platform. But there’s so much optimism and empathy too.

We just have to find it.

I’m writing this content in hopes that it will help a few of you look at things in a different way as far as your online behaviour is concern.

Here are some real examples of positivity I found from Twitter search:

”Thank you to the person in front of me at Starbucks paying it forward. It's my turn to pay it forward. I encourage everyone to pay it forward sometimes. Little surprises like that can make anyone's day. #SpreadPositivity” - @heavin_ann

”A kid maybe like 11-12 years old just opened the door for me. That hasn’t happened to me since 2014.” – @yessyiswrite

“Being told you’re beautiful by a random stranger and not in a cat call way. Just a lovely woman telling another woman she’s beautiful. #PayItForward” – @Lopezinq

Did you know that social media don’t give us random content that we don’t want to consume? They don’t actually push negativity on anyone.

They just show us posts, articles or videos that we respond to — through a thing called “algorithm”- based on the topics and people we’ve decided to search and follow.

If you don’t like the content you’re seeing on the internet, it would be really valuable to take a closer look at your own consumption behavior – both online and offline.

Yes. Forget about social media for a second. Let’s ask ourselves: Are we looking for positivity or negativity in the real world?

Do we still notice the random acts of kindness that happen around us?

In closing, here’s my challenge to you:

Spend the next 24 hours looking for “the good.” Look for the kindness, positivity, and empathy.

If you’ll commit to this, drop your next tweets or posts with the hashtag #PositivityChallenge and share something good that happened in your day.

Doesn’t matter how small or insignificant you think it is.

Can’t wait to hear from you.
