Kapampangan brothers off to Austria for World Wood Day

KAPAMPANGAN woodcarving masters Willy and Edwin Layug are now in Graz, Austria as the country’s representatives to the World Wood Day celebration.

World Wood Day is an annual cultural event on March 21 to raise public awareness, the importance, and goodness of wood. Started in 2012, this year’s event will run from March 19 to 24. The event brings together woodcarvers, wood craftsmen and wood artisans from all over the world.

The elder Willy was the country’s representative last year to the said celebration in Cambodia. He said that he is proud to be with his brother in this very important event.

Willy started sculpting at five years old using clay, He created the image of Our Lady of Palo used by Pope Francis in the Holy Mass in Tacloban.

He was also named outstanding Guaguaeño for sculpting, most outstanding Kapampangan for ecclesiastical art and best actor in the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival for “Dukit,” an autobiography of his life as an artist. He is the most accomplished sculptor of his time.

His younger brother Edwin is also a master in his own right. Now based in Pulilan, Bulacan, Edwin is among awardees of the Gintong Pulilenyo Art Awards. The younger Layug is one of the most renowned artists in Bulacan and the region having made a mark in the field of ecclesiastical art and is the first Filipino to install a full altar in Singapore.

Layug was able to accomplish dozens of projects, including altar works in Calumpit and San Rafael towns where his works on main altars now adorn churches there. He was also commissioned to work on the altar and images inside the Divine Mercy Shrine in Marilao town.

Layug's latest project includes the majestic altar at the Saint Joseph Parish in Taguig City.

He is currently working on contemporary works for competitions here. He is also a member of the Mandukit Anluagui ning Sta. Ursula.
