IT was a night of rejoicing and reminiscing when Dr. Warfe Engracia of Rajah Tupas Medical Services hosted a thanksgiving dinner at Casino Español de Cebu for the distinction and award he has received these past months. Late last year, he was conferred the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa by the North Christian University of Florida, USA; and last February, he was one of four recipients of the city government’s Most Outstanding Individual award during the 81st Charter Day celebration.

Doc Warfe is a multi-faceted personality. Aside from being an accomplished radiologist/sonologist, he is an artist, a poet, a historian, a movie/stage actor, an ambassador of goodwill for arts and culture, and of course, Cebu’s most acclaimed singing doctor who has given concerts here and abroad. As expected, he delighted his family and friends with songs during the party. Accompanying him on the piano was his bosom buddy, Eddie Dakay. Proud and happy faces at the celebration were Warfe’s wife Elaine, his daughters Mariquit Pascual, Ellen Grace Zacher and Athena Ever, and son Christopher.

The Seda team led by group general manager Andrea Mastellone, recently came to town and hosted dinner at The Pig & Palm to give updates on the soon-to-open hotel at Cebu Business Park. Seda Hotel Ayala Center (the property used to be managed by Marriott), is the ninth property of the wholly-owned Filipino brand and is the home-grown chain’s largest in the Visayas. It is being refurbished “to align with Seda’s timeless look consisting of simple, contemporary lines matched with earth tones.” The entire place is given a dramatic make-over to reflect the open space layout of other Seda hotels. Like all Seda hotels, Seda Hotel Ayala Center (set to open in the third quarter) will feature art pieces by Filipino artists, among them works of industrialist-photographer Jaime Zobel de Ayala and sculptress Ann Pamintuan.

And speaking of hotel teams, there’s the super-friendly team of the Marco Polo Hongkong group who gave us such a warm welcome during our visit there last month. It was a pleasure having lunch with director of communications Samantha Poon and assistant communications manager Angel Wong at Marco Polo Hongkong’s Italian resto Cucina. Yes, the restaurant is authentic as only an Italian chef de Cuisine can make it. Chef Andrea Delzanno is hands on and he explained to us each yummy dish that was served on the sixth floor resto overlooking the Hongkong harbor. And who should swing by but the new MP-HK group general manager Dalip Singh? Personable and friendly, he soon made us feel like an old friend. And then there was director of sales and marketing Vanessa Kong who came over from another table where she was entertaining another group. Super-nice...everyone was.

Our home was Marco Polo Hongkong, the nearest to the Star Ferry terminal among the three Marco Polo hotels (the other two are Marco Polo Prince and Marco Polo Gateway). It is hard to beat the location of these hotels. All three connect to Harbour City, the largest shopping complex in Hongkong and one of the main tourist attractions in the Tsim Sha Tsui area. With over 450 shops and more than 50 food and beverage outlets, plus the cruise terminal, it provides visitors a one-stop shopping and entertainment experience.

Small wonder then that the Marco Polo hotels seem to be the favorite of tourists in Hongkong.
