CPDRC still has ample water supply despite El Niño: official

CEBU. Inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) hide under roofed sections of the jail's quadrangle to avoid the heat. Though the weak El Niño is bringing hotter weather across the country, CPDRC officials said they are not worried as they still have a stable water supply available for their needs. WHILE some areas in Cebu Province, especially farmlands, are already experiencing the ill effects of the mild El Niño, there is still sufficient supply of water at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC).

In an interview, CPDRC Warden Reynaldo Valmoria said their source of water, a deep well within the facility's vicinity, is still producing enough for them to continue their operations.

"So far, wala ra gyud tay problema sa tubig, pero bisan pa, nag-andam lang gihapon ta para sa huwaw," he said.

Valmoria said they've already reminded the 3,105 inmates to be mindful of their water consumption and always keep their drums and containers filled with water.

The facility has at least 50 drums, each having a capacity of 200 liters.

Valmoria said a private university has also pledged support should the facility experience water shortage.

"Ready ra gyud mi, pero dili lang pud mi magkompiyansa. Just in case lang gyud bitaw kay di nato na malikayan tungod sa kainit. So far pud, wala pay nangasakit na inmates tungod sa kainit," he added.

The mild El Niño, which started on February 20, will continue until June, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Earlier, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) assured that there is sufficient supply of water for its jail facilities.

Last March 14, BJMP spokesperson Chief Inspector Xavier Solda said they have anticipated water shortage during summer, prompting them to coordinate with their water suppliers ahead of time.
