Makati ex-mayor's executive assistant survives gun attack

THE executive secretary of former Makati City mayor JunJun Binay survived a gun attack Thursday evening, police said Friday, March 22.

The Southern Police District reported that Monaliza Bernardo, 44, just alighted in front of her apartment in Barangay Olympia, Makati City around 8:13 p.m. Thursday, March 21, when two men onboard a motorcycle shot her.

The gunmen, who wore helmets, fled after shooting Bernardo, who was hit in the right hand and stomach.

Bernardo was brought to a hospital for treatment.

A caliber .45 pistol was used in the shooting, based on the spent shells recovered from the scene.

Based on initial investigation, the gunmen have been sighted in the area several times Thursday, March 21.

In a statement, Binay, who is seeking a re-election in the May 13 polls, said the attack was politically-motivated.

“Mabait po siya na tao. Wala po siyang kaaway, kaya nalulungkot po ako na baka nadamay siya sa laban ko sa pulitika. Sana naman ay hindi,” he said.

“Kung sino man ang may kagagawan ng krimen na ito, hindi kami titigil hanggang di kayo mapanagot sa inyong kasalanan,” he added.

Senator Nancy Binay, for her part, said she was shocked of what happened to Bernardo, whom they considered a family member already.

She urged the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies to hunt the perpetrators of the incident. (SunStar Philippines)
