MANILA - The battle for athletic supremacy between University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University is not just limited to volleyball this season.
This came as the both teams nipped separate rivals recently at the Erenchun Field inside Ateneo campus.
UST, banking on mid-fielders Mario Clarino and Nicanor Palacio, scored a 2-0 win over deposed champion University of the Philippines while the FEU routed host Ateneo, 4-0.
UP, which holds a 2-6-1 card, dropped out of the championship race after the UAAP board nullified three of its games.
The UAAP football technical board penalized UP after finding out that two of its players – Ghanaian Ayi Nii Aryee and Nathaniel De Guzman – played for the United Football League (UFL) this UAAP season. The board said State U’s move was a violation to the UAAP by-laws.
In the last game, De La Salle and University of the East settled to a 1-1 draw.
Last Saturday, FEU and UST forked a much-awaited title duel after dispatching foes in the men’s volleyball semifinals at the Arena in San Juan City.
The title showdown will be repeat of Season 70 (2008) finale wherein the Tigers beat the Tamaraws in Game Three and snapped the Morayta-based squad’s bid for a fourth consecutive title.
Meanwhile, in women’s football, FEU (3-0-4) boosted its finals bid after ripping Ateneo (0-6-1), 6-0.
The men’s title showdown is set on Thursday at the Ateneo. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
