FIRE destroyed the house of Bacolod City Councilor Ayesha Joy Villaflor, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) federation president, and 19 others in Purok Masagana, Barangay 6, Bacolod City on Friday morning, March 22.

Chief Insp. Publio Plotena, city fire marshal, said his office received a call from a concerned citizen regarding the incident around 9:25 a.m.

He said the fire started from the room of Nilo Tooma on the second floor of the house, which was owned by Fatima Pagdatu.

It immediately spread to neighboring houses, including the house of Villaflor, which were made of light materials.

Before the incident, there were children aged three to four years old playing with matches inside the house of Pagdatu, according to the report of the Bureau of Fire Protection.

Plotena said 19 houses were destroyed and one was damaged.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was put out at 10:09 a.m. It left an estimated P100,000 worth of damage to properties.

For her part, Villaflor, also a law student, said she was inside the comfort room when she heard her neighbors shouting. When she checked, she saw the fire near their house so she went to the room of her brother to wake him up. Her father was already outside the house helping their neighbors.

She said their house was destroyed and they failed to save their personal belongings especially her books, identification cards, among others.

“I only saved my cellular phone because my father told me to call some rescuers. It’s very hard for us,” she added.

Villaflor and her family are now staying at the house of Barangay 6 Kagawad Allan Ferrer, while some other affected families are staying at the barangay gymnasium.

The Department of Social Services and Development has been processing the needs of the affected families.
